Fragrance of France fills the air at a farm near Hillsboro

Rows of lavender in hues of purple and a little pink grow in
a field on Debbie and Neal Cook's farm outside Hillsboro. The
mesmerizing scent wafts through the air.
Debbie fell in love with the fragrant herb several years ago
when she traveled to Sequim, Wash., to prepare her niece's
wedding cake. She saw a lavender display in a grocery store and
learned that Sequim touts itself as the lavender capital of
North America, with numerous lavender farms.
The climate and soil in Sequim are similar to that in
Provence, France, which is known for its lavender.
Cook didn't know if lavender, which needs full sun and dry
conditions, would survive in humid southern Ohio's clay soil.
But she brought some home, determined to try.
"We keep adding more and more and more" plants, she
says.
The Cooks operate Springbrook Meadows Lavender Farm, where
visitors come to learn about the herb, cut their own lavender
and buy plants and products made from it.
